Vancouver ER wait times can be brutal. Learning where to go for the right care is your best self-rescue strategy.

Medical resources in the Lower Mainland are triaged by severity. If you go to the ER at VGH for a minor issue, you will be ranked as low priority and could wait all night.

Step-by-Step Care Options

  1. ER or 911 (Life-Threatening): Go immediately for chest pain (heart attack signs), sudden slurred speech (stroke signs), severe burns, or compound fractures. Major ERs include VGH, St. Paul's, Richmond Hospital, and Burnaby General.
  2. UPCC (Urgent & Primary Care Centres): These are for non-life-threatening issues that need care within 12?4 hours (e.g., sprains, cuts needing stitches, minor infections, or high fevers). Most are open until 10 PM daily.
  3. GP or Walk-in Clinic: For routine care like prescription refills, mild colds, or chronic pain management.
  4. If Unsure: Call 811. A nurse can check your symptoms and even tell you which local UPCC currently has the shortest wait time.
