Vancouver ER wait times can be brutal. Learning where to go for the right care is your best self-rescue strategy.

Medical resources in the Lower Mainland are triaged by severity. If you go to the ER at VGH for a minor issue, you will be ranked as low priority and could wait all night.
Step-by-Step Care Options
- ER or 911 (Life-Threatening): Go immediately for chest pain (heart attack signs), sudden slurred speech (stroke signs), severe burns, or compound fractures. Major ERs include VGH, St. Paul's, Richmond Hospital, and Burnaby General.
- UPCC (Urgent & Primary Care Centres): These are for non-life-threatening issues that need care within 12?4 hours (e.g., sprains, cuts needing stitches, minor infections, or high fevers). Most are open until 10 PM daily.
- GP or Walk-in Clinic: For routine care like prescription refills, mild colds, or chronic pain management.
- If Unsure: Call 811. A nurse can check your symptoms and even tell you which local UPCC currently has the shortest wait time.
