Post-Accident Pain? When and How to Access ICBC Medical Benefits
Internal injuries often show up 48 hours later. If you miss the "Golden Window," getting your medical claim approved becomes much harder.

In BC, the first 12 weeks after an accident are considered the "Golden Recovery Period." Under the current Enhanced Care system, you have immediate access to healthcare regardless of who caused the accident.
When to Seek Medical Help
- The 48-Hour Rule: Adrenaline masks pain. If you feel neck stiffness, headaches, or dizziness, see a doctor or visit a walk-in clinic within 24?8 hours. This creates an official medical record that connects your symptoms to the crash.
- No Referral Necessary: For the first 12 weeks, you can go directly to a Physiotherapist, Chiropractor, or RMT using just your Claim Number. You do not need a doctor’s note for these initial sessions.
- Extension of Care: If your injuries persist beyond 3 months, your healthcare provider will submit a report to your ICBC adjuster to request an extension of benefits based on your progress.
- Track "User Fees": While ICBC pays most clinics directly, some clinics charge a small "user fee" or "top-up." Keep these receipts; depending on your situation, you may be able to claim these back later.
Summary: See a doctor early to document your injuries. Use your claim number to access pre-approved treatments within the first 12 weeks.
